Merry Christmas!

A little ditty for Christmas. Whatever 2009 has brought me, I, El Director, wishes all the readers and fans of CWP a very Merry Christmas and a fruitful New Year.

A look back at 2009...

This is quite a personal comic strip. It has been a tough 2009 for CWP, but rather than blog about it, I decided to illustrate it. The big question I am asking myself is 'what do I do next?'

And to be honest, I do not know...

Agent Special Delivery

Apologies for being a day late with this one, but Monday was rushing around on Planet Earth with very little to show for it! Anyhow, we see Jay unleash his comic book fantasies by portraying his flatmate Kay as 'Agent Special Delivery'!

This particular comic has a murky beginning. This is partially based on a webisode and partially based on Jay himself. It's easier for you to watch the webisode than for me to prattle on about it, but needless to say, it establishes in the cannon the 'Dumb and Dumber' aspect of Jay and Kay's relationship. And yes, Jay is most definitely the 'dumber'...

So enjoy the almost darker side of CWP with 'Kay the Cool'. Not sure how I will spin this one out, but something will come into my mind...

Poster Boys

From Poster Boys

Posters like all aspects of the post production stage, are essential to the publicity of a film. They are there to make a visual impact of the film to the casual observer, and so have to grab the attention of the average audience member who has seen every special effect known to humanity.

From Poster Boys

I'm on a limited budget, so spectacular graphical representations of 'Caution Wet Paint' are simply out of the budget. Otherwise I would be in that holiday home in Columbia by now...

From Poster Boys

So I have decided to stick with the comic book theme of 'Caution Wet Paint' in order to design the perfect poster for 'Jay and Kay Save the World'. Plus it is a short film that contains loads of animated clips, so it suits the subject matter of the short very well. And so, here it is, the final design for the poster to 'Jay and Kay Save the World!'

From Poster Boys

So, the difference between this and the first pic? The stills within the poster have been stylised as a coloured drawing rather than using plain pics lifted from the film. The speech bubbles have a deper bacground, the 'credits list' at the bottom of the poster have a background to make them stand out and finally there is a lovely gold background, to contrast with the main images.

Knowing me however, this is probably not the last poster design coming your way...

You see what happens in front of the lens, but there is a whole process that goes on behind the lens to make the magic come to life! Enjoy!

2010 is upon us and so we here at CWP will add a little bit of fun, milk and alien invasion to the beginning of the new decade!

This is a bit surreal. All right, maybe it is very surreal, but there is a destination to the 'Super Sushi Club'. Really, I have plan with this. If it does not work out, I can always call it apocryphal and therefore discontinue it from the CWP cannon.

The Super Sushi Club!

The fact that I am creating a whole backstory to CWP and a whole world through the comic books is a fascinating one. Plus there is the fascinating possibilities open through expanding the Super Sushi...

Silvertop!

A simple one this week, and following on from the last week's issue, we take a look at the second protagonist from 'Jay and Kay Save the World', Lieutenant Silvertop, the 'ying' to Goldtop's 'yang'.

So take a little look at the fun that Silvertop gets upto!

It is quite simple. Goldtop is evil...

Da Crew!

I love those guys. Really. Well, maybe not that much. But, I had to immortalise the folks behind the camera. The ones, who normally, do not get the glory, but who have as much 'fun' as anyone else on set. The crew!

Right, El Director is off on holiday and so the comic strip will next be up and running on Monday October 19th! Until then...;)

Milk! From Outer Space!

I really liked doing this, both as a short film and as a comic strip.

Originally, Nick came to me and asked me to shoot Jay and Kay in the back garden, just chatting, and most importantly, having the milk bottle 'disappear. He then told me to 'trust him'. So I did. A few weeks later, he brought me the animation sequence and so was born the two alter egos of Silvertop and Goldtop.

The reason why I have enjoyed this webisode so much is that the story is continued in the latest incarnation of Caution Wet paint, Jay and Kay Save the World! Yep, give me a chance, and I will string a story out far beyond the stars...into the realms of madness!

Quantitative Easing

This strip is a one off, for now. And I will see how this one is received, but I was feeling a little bit political, and so without further ado, I present Jay and Kay's take on the current state of the UK economy and farce that is known as Quantitative Easing. Enjoy!

The CWP Comic - Kung Fu Jay! (Part 2)

Part 2 of Kung Fu Jay. I loved shooting this particular webisode with Ari and Kuldip, as it was a complete laugh to do. I also managed to squeeze out two shorts from one shoot. I am particularly proud of this webisode, and it stands as one of my favourite CWP moments. Why? Well, all the webisodes were scripted from the feature length script. If there was a point in the script I was not sure about, I would write a sketch to test it out. There is a scene in the CWP script which requires a 1930's silent film to be slotted in. And the concept works beautifully, as you can see below

The CWP Comic - Kung Fu Jay! (Part 1)

The first part of Kung Fu Jay in comic book form. This particular webisode had an interesting inception. First of all, it gives an introduction to the mechanics of Jay's comic book imagination.

Secondly, this was based on a short film known as 'Kung Fu Matt'. Back in the days of my very early film making, when I was larking about with my friends and a camera, I got four of my mates to muck about in a back garden while I shot and edited their antics into 'Kung Fu Matt'. Word for word, action for action, even down to the sound fx, it is almost identical to the CWP version. But there are some things that should just never see the light of day. 'Kung Fu Matt' is one of them, not for general release but for my hard drive only.

Issue 6 - 'Comics'

For me, this was the best comic I have done so far, but in terms of the webisode that it is based on, it is probably my least favourite outing of Jay and Kay. I love the style of this comic, how I have managed to get the eye contact and the subtle looks between the two characters. For me, in a comic book way, the aesthetics come out great. Read on my pretties!

And so yes, I get to eh legendary 'Kung Fu Jay' next week. Stick around, as there is quite a story behind that particular 'comic'! (El D.)

Issue 5 - The Suitcase

I will admit that as a comic, this one is a little bit trippy. I really wanted to explore the stylisation of the characters and so really had a play around with the strip itself. So please, bear with me for this one. Anyhow, you can catch the original webisode from where this comic descends from by clicking here!

After next week, I will start to drift away from the webisodes. While they will be the starting point for the adventures of Jay and Kay, I will no longer stick religiously to the order of their braodcast, and will have a little 'fun' with the world of CWP!

Enjoy! (cmd)

Issue 4 - Behind the Scenes

Our first adventure at The Bus Stop was a lot of fun to film, but as with any film set had its ups and downs. So I, El Director, has decided to go behind the scenes of this particular set, and show you the viewer and the fan, a little bit of the magic behind that very first outing for Jay and Kay in comic book form! Enjoy!

Issue 3 - The 'Milkman'

This is personally my favourite webisode from the first series of CWP. The part of the tale where Kay gets to move in with Jay and so really kick starting their adventures together. I loved shooting it, I enjoyed editing it, and today, I still get a kick out of watching it!
